U.S. awards switchyard upgrade contract for 517.8-MW Garrison

OMAHA, Neb., U.S. 10/18/11 (PennWell) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $23.7 million contract to Koontz Electric Co. Inc. for upgrade of the switchyard of the 517.8-MW Garrison Dam project on the Missouri River in Garrison, N.D.

The Corps’ Omaha District took bids for the work in August. The Corps awarded a $3.89 million contract in 2010 to Koontz for rehabilitation of station service at Garrison.

Koontz, of Morrilton, Ark., is to rebuild a 230/115-kilovolt switchyard including new transformers, breakers, and disconnect switches on a site adjacent to the Garrison hydropower plant. The work originally was valued at between $10 million and $15 million.
