Nile group seeks environmental studies of four Kagera Basin projects

The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) invites expressions of interest from consultants to perform environmental and social impact assessments of four small multi-purpose dams in the Kagera River Basin of Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Responses are due February 14.

NBI’s Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program (NELSAP) said it is in advanced stages of hiring a consultant to undertake feasibility studies of four small multi-purpose dams. Although the study solicitations do not specify hydropower projects, NELSAP separately recruited consultants last year to serve as project manager for the preparation of the 61.5-MW Rusumo Falls hydroelectric project on the Kagera River.

NELSAP currently seeks consultants to undertake detailed environmental and social assessments and preparation of environmental and social management plans and resettlement action plans. The work is expected to require seven months beginning in September.

Expressions of interest and qualifications, in English, are due by 10 a.m. February 14 by hand delivery or registered mail to the address below. An original and three copies are to be submitted, labeled “Expression of Interest for Consultancy Services for Undertaking Independent Environmental and Social Assessments for Multi-purpose Small Dams in the Kagera River Basin Tender No. Kagera/NBTF/2011/ESIA/01.”
