ABB to increase number of transmission lines at 14,000-MW Itaipu

FOZ DO IGUACU, Brazil 1/16/12 (PennWell) — Energy consortium ABB has won a bid to increase Paraguay’s power supply from transmission lines at the 14,000-MW Itaipu hydroelectric plant, facility operator Itaipu Binacional announces.

Paraguay’s power is currently supplied by only two of Itaipu’s four 500-kV transmission lines.

ABB won the contract after submitting an offer of US$34 million for the $41 million project, although the two other companies that also submitted bids have until Jan. 17 to appeal.

ABB has previously provided work at Itaipu – most recently in July 2011, when the company was given an $80 million contract for substation work.
