A group comprised of Norway’s Multiconsult, Skava of Chile and Amberg of Switzerland has been awarded a contract to provide owners engineer services for underground works at the 531-MW Alto Maipo hydroelectric project in Chile.

The contract, offered by developer AES Gener, will see the trio provide a staff of 28 over a period of four years.

Alto Maipo includes two hydropower plants: the 264-MW Alfalfal 2 and the 267-MW Las Lajas.

The Alfalfal 2 project will be located in the Colorado River sub-basin downstream from Alfalfal 1, and Las Lajas will be located near the confluence of the Maipo River and El Manzano marsh.

The scheme includes two underground power stations and 67 km of tunnels being excavated by drilling, blasting and tunnel boring machine.

HydroWorld.com reported this past December that AES had received S$1.217 billion from a syndicate of local and international banks for construction of the project.

The project is to be operational by 2018.
