AES Panama’s 122-MW Esti hydropower plant back in operation

GUALACA, Panama 6/15/12 (PennWell) — Repairs to the 122-MW Esti hydroelectric plant in Panama’s Chiriqui Province are complete, operator AES Panama announces.

The 19 months of repairs were prompted by a blockage in the plant’s conduction tunnel. In all, AES says the work cost about US$93 million and employed a workforce of more than 675 on-site.

“We are very pleased that Esti is back online and can thus increase the contributions of AES Panama’s national interconnected system,” says AES Panama President Marco de la Rosa. reported last August that the company had brought the first unit of its 223-MW Changuinola hydropower plant online.
