Alstom to refurbish units of Venezuela’s 10,300-MW Simon Bolivar

Utility CVG Electrificacion del Caroni (Edelca) has awarded an 80 million euro (US$104.6 million) contract to Alstom Hydro for refurbishment of four turbine-generators of the 10,300-MW Simon Bolivar hydroelectric project on Venezuela’s Caroni River.

Alstom is to provide complete refurbishment of four 400-MW Francis turbines and generators and associated hydro-mechanical equipment in the project’s Guri 1 powerhouse in Porto Ordaz. The first unit is scheduled for operation in the first quarter of 2009.

In January, Edelca awarded a 100 million euro (US$129 million) contract for rehabilitation of five units to VA Tech Escher Wyss and a Brazilian unit of Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation. Simon Bolivar, the former Raul Leoni or Guri hydro project, has two powerhouses of 10 turbines each, which are being modernized at a rate of two per year. (HNN 1/26/07)
