Austrian energy provider Verbund has awarded Andritz Hydro a contract to modernize the 236-MW Ybbs-Persenbeug hydropower project.

The run-of-river plant was completed in 1959 and is located on the Danube River. Verbund announced the plant would undergo a seven-year, US$186.4 million modernization in October 2012, with work to include the replacement or refurbishment of turbine blades, generators, transformers, high-voltage cables and circuit breakers.

Andritz said the rehabilitation will increase Ybbs-Persenbeug’s efficiency by about 4.5%, resulting in the ability to provide power for 17,000 additional households.

Andritz completed similar modernization services for Verbund’s 287-MW Asach hydropower project in 2010.
