Argentina seeks hydro inventory of Percy, Bermejo rivers, tributaries

Argentina’s federal planning ministry seeks bids to study the hydropower potential of the Percy and Bermejo rivers and Bermejo tributaries in Argentina. Techno-economic proposals are due in three solicitations on August 25.

Argentina’s Ministerio de Planification Federal, Inversion Publicas y Servicios invited expressions of interest in June to study the hydropower potential of the Iruya and Pescado rivers, tributaries of the Bermejo River in northern Argentina. It also took bids in February to survey and update studies of small hydropower sites in Mendoza Province. It also took bids to study a multi-purpose hydropower complex on the Las Canas, Gastona and Medina rivers, as well as bids to construct the 637-MW Chihuido 1 hydroelectric project.

General objectives of the three current solicitations are to cover water usage for multiple purposes to promote economic and social development of area communities, provision of clean renewable energy generation, contribution of water for consumption and production activities, and promotion of private sector investments.

Percy River Basin

In the first of the three solicitations, the ministry seeks a study of a proposed multi-purpose hydroelectric complex in the Percy River Basin. The study is to develop a tender project including intake works for drinking water and irrigation, a water treatment plant and power generation works including updating of a previous study of the La Escondida 1 hydroelectric project.

The study is to examine the Percy basin as a whole to explore a viable alternative to La Escondida, which would generate about 40 GWh per year. The ministry seeks a project with total basin installed capacity of 40 MW and power generation greater than 110 GWh per year.

Bermejo, Mojotoro River sub-basin

In a second solicitation, the ministry seeks a study of proposed small hydropower development in the upper Bermejo Basin in the Mojotoro River sub-basin. Objectives are to develop a tender project for a study including flow rates in drainage areas of dams, an adequate water supply for downstream populations and storage for irrigation, and electricity generation. Previous studies in the sub-basin included the multi-purpose Las Maderas Dam, in final stages of construction, and the 55.2-MW Mojotoro hydro project and Vilte Dam.

Bermejo, Burrumayo, Grande Inferior river sub-basins

In a third solicitation, the ministry seeks a study of multiple developments in the upper Bermejo basin in the Burrumayo and Grande Inferior river sub-basins. Objectives are to develop a tender project for a study including flow rates in drainage areas of dams, an adequate water supply for downstream populations and storage for irrigation, and electricity generation.

A tender notice may be obtained from the ministry Internet site at http://energia3.mecon.gov.ar/contenidos/verpagina.php?idpagina=3823.
