Atlantis signs lease for tidal power project in Canada’s Bay of Fundy

Tidal energy developer Atlantis Resources Ltd. has signed a 10-year extendable seabed sublease with the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE), providing Atlantis a berth in Canada’s Bay of Fundy to deploy a 1.5-MW tidal turbine.

“We are very pleased to have concluded agreements with FORCE and the Nova Scotia Department of Energy, securing a berth to deploy tidal stream turbines and deliver clean predictable power to the residents of Nova Scotia,” Atlantis Chief Executive Tim Cornelius said Oct. 29. “Canada in general, and the Bay of Fundy in particular, offer world class tidal energy resource to which our turbine technology is ideally suited.”

Atlantis intends initially to deploy a single 1.5-MW AR-1500 tidal turbine system, enough to power 750 homes. The developer is working with FORCE to determine an optimal location for the turbine deployment.

Subsea electrical cables are being laid at each of four berths at FORCE to deliver power to FORCE’s onshore substation near Parrsboro. Atlantis said it plans to open a project office in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in early 2015 with turbine deployment operations planned for late 2016.

The developer said the sublease was granted following conclusion of a C$5 million (US$4.49 million) grant agreement with Sustainable Development Technology Canada, which was signed in June, and a project agreement with the Nova Scotia Department of Energy, which was signed in October.

Earlier this year, the Nova Scotia Department of Energy selected developers OpenHydro and Black Rock Tidal Power to deploy arrays at the FORCE test site.

Atlantis and marine energy developer Minesto received nearly US$960,000 in September from the European Union’s Eurostars Programme to help advance tidal energy technology. Last year Atlantis acquired the 398-MW MeyGen array in Scotland’s Pentland Firth.
