European developers AWS Ocean Energy and Trident Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the companies work together to optimize a wave energy converter design.
The collaboration will produce the “Archimedes Waveswing Wave Energy Converter (WEC)” that will then be applied to Trident‘s PowerPod II generator.
The partners said the Archimedes Waveswing will help maximize the efficiency of Trident’s generating units through a “highly efficient sub-sea pressure-differential point-absorber concept”, combined with “efficient linear generator technology.”
“The Archimedes Waveswing is one of the most structurally efficient wave energy converter designs,” AWS CEO Simon Grey said. “However, economic performance is critically dependent on our ability to control the device in real-time using our advanced algorithms. The Trident linear generator allows us to achieve this whilst also delivering best-in-class cost per kW and a highly robust design.”
Both AWS and Trident have previously received financing for their technologies from Wave Energy Scotland through separate funding calls, with amounts awarded in US$349,000 and $594,000 grants, respectively.
“We are really looking forward to working with the AWS team and delivering a fully controllable power take-off system, tailored for optimal performance of their Waveswing device,” Trident CEO Steve Packard said. “Integrating the technologies is an exciting development for us, and I believe it demonstrates the maturing nature of the marine energy sector as a whole.”
