China firm to build 108-MW Cheay Areng River project in Cambodia

Cambodia’s minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy announced China Southern Power Grid Corp. Ltd. is to build a 108-MW hydroelectric project on Cambodia’s Cheay Areng River in Koh Kong Province.

State-run Agence Kampuchea Presse said Minister Suy Sem met with China Southern officials February 18 in Phnom Penh, saying the project would be built in Thmar Baing District.

The Chinese corporation has completed a feasibility study of the US$300 million project. Upon completion in 2015, the project is to generate more than 617 million kWh annually for sale to Cambodian consumers and possibly for export.

China Southern Director Fu Zhiping said the project location was favorable because it would not affect the environment, social issues, local housing, or land ownership.
