China, Uganda sign MOU for 188-MW Isimba Falls hydropower plant construction

The governments of Uganda and China have signed a memorandum of understanding allowing for the construction of the 188-MW Isimba Falls hydropower project.

The agreement will see the China International Water & Electric Corporation (CWEC) develop the project using US$500 million in financing provided by the Export-Import Bank of China.

Construction on the project is expected to begin in September, with work to last 34 months.

The Isimba Falls plant will be Uganda’s fourth largest, following the 250-MW Bujagali, 600-MW Karuma and 600-MW Ayago.
