Colombia utility to build 800-MW Sogamoso

The board of Colombia utility Isagen S.A. has approved plans to build the 800-MW Sogamoso hydroelectric project on Colombia’s Sogamoso River.

An Isagen spokesman said Sogamoso would be built over the next ten years for an investment of 2.3 trillion pesos (US$1.3 billion).

Isagen purchased rights to develop Sogamoso in 2007 from Electrificadora de Santander S.A. for 26 billion pesos (US$12 million). (HNN 9/14/07) It purchased Santander’s rights to studies, designs, and environmental licensing of the project.

Isagen previously included Sogamoso among four hydroelectric projects totaling 1,920 MW that it plans to develop from 2010-2015. On the drawing boards since 1961, Sogamoso would include a 190-meter-tall, 345-meter-long dam and an underground powerhouse containing three vertical Francis turbines.
