Consultants sought by Tanzania energy, water regulator

The Tanzania Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) seeks bids from U.S. firms to provide technical assistance to agency operations particularly in regulation of power projects. Bids are due November 28.

The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (TDA) awarded Tanzania a grant of US$623,580 to finance technical assistance to help EWURA establish operational protocols based on international practices so that the agency may carry out its duties. The assistance is to address specific requirements needed to enhance the rules, standard modes of operation, and professional capabilities of EWURA’s staff.

Tanesco has an installed capacity of 1,212 MW, of which 562 MW is from hydropower. National utility Tanzania Electric Supply Co. (Tanesco) expects annual demand will grow to more than 1,100 MW by 2010.

Tanesco Managing Director Idris Rashidi recently said the company needs to invest a substantial amount of money in the next five years to improve power production, transmission, and distribution. (HNN 10/31/08)

Only U.S. firms and individuals may bid for the work. However, the contractor may use Tanzanian subcontractors for up to 20 percent of the TDA grant amount.
