KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo 4/18/12 (PennWell) — The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) invites expressions of interest from consultants to perform studies of options for rural electrification including 10 small hydropower projects and rehabilitation of the 12-MW Sanga hydro plant. Responses are due April 30.

DRC received funding from the African Development Bank for a project of electrification in rural areas and peri-urban areas on the fringes of cities. The program complements DRC’s plans to rehabilitate the 350-MW Inga 1 and 1,424-MW Inga 2 hydro projects and to construct the 4,300-MW Inga 3 project.

In the current solicitation, DRC’s electric utility, Societe Nationale d’Electricite invites consultants to submit expressions of interest in studies of:
o 10 small hydro projects between 1 and 36 MW in 10 provinces;
o two solar power projects of 0.5 and 1.5 MW;
o a 20-MW power plant to burn methane gas from Lake Kivu;
o rehabilitation of the two-unit 12-MW Sanaga hydro plant and electrification of surrounding areas; and
o electricity distribution in Kiliba.

Expressions of interest and qualifications, labeled “Service d’un Consultant pour la realisation des etudes d’electrification des zones periurbaines et rurales,” are due to the address below by 10 a.m. April 30.
