East Africa pool to seek generation, transmission plans

The Eastern Africa Power Pool plans to solicit services to develop a power master plan for the hydropower-rich region.

With a US$993,388 grant from the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) the power pool plans an Eastern Africa Power Master Plan study, a grid code study, and capacity building and institutional support.

Objectives of the program include preparation of a regional power system master plan aimed at preparing a list of generation and transmission projects that have significance for the realization of the power pool. The list is to include an implementation schedule and cost as well as consideration of environmental and social effects.

Work also is to include preparation of a regional transmission grid code aimed at setting rules, guidelines, and standards to be followed by various agencies and participants in the system. The program also includes a capacity building and institutional support program to upgrade project management skills of trainees in the region.
