Ecuador seeks study of expanded 25-MW Ocana 2 project

Ecuador’s investment agency invites expressions of interest from consultants to conduct feasibility studies of the 25-MW Ocana 2 hydroelectric project on Ecuador’s Canar River. Responses are due September 24.

Ocana 2 originally was designed at 19.8 to 22.1 MW to generate additional power from the discharge of the 26-MW Ocana hydroelectric project plus some additional flows from the Canar. Ocana was recently completed for Ecuador utility Empresa Generadora del Austro S.A. (ElecAustro) by Sevilla y Martinez Ingenieros C.A. with equipment by Alstom Hydro Espana SL and Siemens S.A. Ecuador.

However, Ecuador’s Instituto Nacional de Preinversion (INP) now says the possibility has been identified to also use flows from the Tigsay River, a downstream tributary of the Canar, to increase flows and power a 25-MW Ocana 2.

INP seeks consultants to conduct a feasibility study based on viable alternative pre-feasibility studies; to determine technical, economic, financial, social, and environmental impacts; and to develop final design studies of the project. The work is expected to require 12 months for a budget of US$1.75 million.

Expression of interest forms may be obtained from the INP Internet site,, under “Expresiones de Interes.” Expressions of interest, in writing or by e-mail are due to the address below by 3 p.m. September 24.
