EDF awards governor work for France’s 240-MW La Rance tidal

Electricite de France (EDF) has awarded a contract to Alstom of France to supply replacement governors to the world’s largest operating tidal power plant, 240-MW La Rance.

Alstom, one of two bidders for the work, is to supply speed regulation equipment for eight turbine-generator sets.

La Rance, which has 24 10-MW units, has been operating since 1966 in the La Rance River estuary. Its bulb turbine-generators are 5.35 meters in diameter and weigh 470 tons.

Earlier this year, EDF solicited electro-technical services for stators and rotors of La Rance’s generators. (HNN 5/3/07)
