EIA filed for Chile small hydro project

Ingenieria y Construccion Madrid has submitted an environmental impact assessment for a 5.5-MW run-of- river hydro project on the Trueno River in Chile’s southern region IX to national environmental authority Conama, wire services reported.

Construction is slated to start in 2012, and operations would begin 2014, according to wire reports. Investment in the project, if approved, is set to hit US$9 million. The project would connect to the country’s SIC central grid.

In other news, Chilean utility Compania General de Electricidad S.A. (CGE) plans to begin construction this year on its 136-MW Nuble run-of-river hydro project, which could put the hydropower project on schedule for completion in 2013.

Environmental regulators approved the hydropower project in October 2008, and construction had been slated to begin in 2009.
