El Salvador to update studies to expand 99.4-MW Cinco de Noviembre

El Salvador utility Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) seeks bids from consultants to update studies of a proposed 120-MW expansion of the 99.4-MW Cinco de Noviembre hydroelectric project on the Rio Lempa. Bids are due August 12.

CEL took bids in May to replace a 600-kW micro-hydropower turbine-generator at the project. (HNN 4/9/08) It took bids in April for structural analyses of four dams including Cinco de Noviembre.

The project was built in stages between 1951 and 1966, 90 kilometers northeast of San Salvador. Its underground powerhouse recently was upgraded from 81.4 MW.

CEL said it seeks bids to update a feasibility study and to validate an environmental analysis and design and engineering specifications for the project expansion. The expansion would include construction of a channel from the existing dam to a second powerhouse containing two 60-MW turbine-generators.

CEL said Harza Engineering Co. performed a feasibility study of the expansion in 1978 and updated it in 1994. It also updated design, engineering specifications, and solicitation documents in 1995.

Bid documents may be obtained until June 13 from the address below for US$130 plus 13 percent tax payable to Departamento de Tesoreria de CEL. A tender notice and documents, in Spanish, may be viewed on Internet sites www.cel.gob.sv and http://mh.gob.sv.

Bids are due by 2 p.m. August 12. For information, contact Departamento de Licitaciones, Oficinas Centrales de CEL, 5 Planta, 9a Calle Poniente No. 950, Centro de Gobierno, San Salvador, El Salvador; (503) 2211-6149; Fax: (503) 2211-6243; Internet: www.cel.gob.sv.
