El Salvador utility reports on Quince de Septiembre upgrade

El Salvador utility Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) reports work is 70 percent complete to upgrade Unit 2 of the Quince de Septiembre hydroelectric project.

CEL awarded contracts in 2005 for equipment installation to maintain 90 MW at the project in the Rio Lempa Basin. Although Quince de Septiembre has been rated at 157 MW, CEL requested supply and installation of equipment to maintain 90 MW at the plant.

CEL said the 78.3-MW Unit 2 will be increased to 90 MW when complete in June. CEL said it eventually plans to upgrade both turbine-generators at the plant for a total of 180 MW.

The work, which began in November, includes refurbishment of generator coils and governors, rehabilitation of intake gates, replacement of excitation systems, overhaul of transformers and replacement of control panels.

CEL awarded a rehabilitation and modernization contract for the project to Consorcio Alstom Brasil Ltda.-C.V. Ingenieria Asociada S.A. Sargent &Lundy L.L.C. supervised equipment installation.

Earlier this year, the Inter-American Development Bank recruited consultants to perform dam safety studies for Quince de Septiembre and two other CEL hydroelectric projects on the Rio Lempa, 172.8-MW Cerron Grande and 81-MW Cinco de Noviembre. (HNN 2/6/07)
