Industry experts to discuss Brazilian energy transmission issues

Recurring blackouts in northeastern Brazil have some questioning the reliability of the country’s aging transmission infrastructure.

The most recent outage — caused by a wildfire that caused a drop of 10,900 MW in Brazilian states Pernambuco, Bahia, Rio Grande do Norte, Piaui, Alagoas, Cerara, Paraiba, Sergipe and Maranhao earlier this week — was only the latest in a string of transmission-related problems.

Brazil has expanded its generation and transmission capacity regularly via public auctions, though critics say the country’s low-bid process gives investors an incentive to provide cut-rate services.

Industry experts and decision makers are responding by holding a special session to address the concerns associated with Brazil’s power infrastructure.

Included in the panel discussion are:

  • George Vidor, Editorialist, Globo Newspaper, Brazil
  • Nivalde José de Castro, Professor e Pesquisador, Grupo de Estudos do Setor Elétrico – GESEL, Brazil
  • Paulo Pedrosa, Executive President, ABRACE – Associaçà£o Brasileira de Grandes Consumidores Industriais de Energia e de Consumidores Livres (Brazilian Association of Big Industrial Energy Consumers and Free Market Consumers), Brazil
  • Raul Ramos Timponi, Senior Research Analyst, IHS CERA, Brazil

The panelists will discuss strategies utility companies are implementing to stay in business with reduced revenues, the benefits rate reductions are designed to deliver, and the negative impacts decreased revenues will have on auctions and investments in future infrastructure expansion and upgrades.

The special session begins Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. in Sao Paulo, as part of HydroVision Brasil.

HydroVision Brasil is takes place September 24-26 at Sao Paulo’s Transamerica Expo Center. This year’s event is co-located with DistribuTECH Brasil and POWER-GEN Brasil, making it South America’s premier gathering of decision makers, power generators and energy industry members.
