Equipment sought to renovate 7.44-MW Varzob 1 in Tajikistan

India developer NHPC Ltd. seeks bids to supply hydro-mechanical equipment for renovation of the 7.44-MW Varzob 1 hydroelectric project in Tajikistan. Bids are due January 5, 2010.

Varzob (or Varzobskaya) 1, built in 1936, is one of three hydro plants in the 25.34-MW Varzob River hydro cascade, which also includes 14.4-MW Varzob 2, built in 1949, and 3.5-MW Varzob 3, built in 1952. The projects are owned by national utility Barki Tajik.

The Tajikistan Ministry of Energy awarded a contract in 2005 to Eurasia Link Ltd. of the United States for a feasibility study of refurbishing the Varzob cascade plants and the 126-MW Kayrakkum (or Kairakkum) project, which was commissioned in 1957 on Tajikistan’s Syrdarya River. NHPC seeks bids for supply and installation of hydro-mechanical equipment for renovation, modernization, and upgrading of Varzob 1. The work is valued at 23.5 million rupees (US$510,000).

Bid documents may be obtained from the address below until December 29, 2009, for 1,500 rupees (US$33) by demand draft from a scheduled bank payable to NHPC Ltd. at Faridabad, India. Delivery by express mail costs an additional 100 rupees (US$2.20). Documents also may be obtained from the NHPC Internet site,, with the fee paid in a separate envelope labeled “Cost of tender document downloaded from the Internet.”
