Ethiopia seeks planning, decision support for Tana-Beles sub-basins

Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water Resources invites expressions of interest from consultants to provide planning and decision support system development for the Tana and Beles sub-basins, site of the 460-MW Beles hydroelectric project. Responses are due September 4.

The government received US$45 million from the World Bank for the Tana and Beles Integrated Water Resources Development Project, which is intended to develop enabling institutions and investments for integrated planning, management, and development in the Tana and Beles sub-basins to accelerate sustainable growth. The ministry awarded a US$2.3 million equivalent contract in July to BRLi of France, with associates Halcrow of the United Kingdom, Omega of Ethiopia, and Geo-Hyd of France, to develop a water information system for the Tana and Beles sub-basins. The current solicitation is for consultants to assist the Tana Sub-Basin Organization (TaSBO) and the Beles Sub-Basin Organization (BeSBO) with water-related sub-basin planning through development of a knowledge base, analytical tools, a stakeholder consultation process, and institutional capacity building. The work is to require 30 months.
