A partnership that includes Repower Energy Development Corp., the Frabelle Fishing Corp. and TSP Marine Industries Ltd. have broken ground on a 3-MW small hydropower project in the Philippines’ Quezon Province.
The unnamed plant will draw water from the upper reaches of the Labayat River, with construction expected to last about two years. Power generated by the project will qualify for feed-in-tariff (FiT) incentives at a rate of about US$0.13 per kWh.
REDC — a subsidiary of the Pure Energy Holdings Corp. — is no stranger to the Philippines’ small hydro sector, having acquired the Philippine Power and Development Co. in November and signing a joint venture to develop small hydro with the Manila Electric Co. in December.
The venture is the first foray for fishing conglomerates Frabelle and TSP, however, after both have announced plans to use hydropower to electrify their factories and shipyards.
