Progress Energy Florida plans to issue an all-source request for proposals for 1,200 MW of capacity and associated energy, including hydro and ocean power projects. The RFP is to be issued June 12, with bids due Aug. 12.
All sources of generation are eligible, including hydropower, ocean current, and wave energy sources. Proposals will compete with Progress Energy’s self-build option, a high-efficiency, combined-cycle natural gas unit to be built at its power plant in Suwannee County, Fla. The proposed unit would have an in-service date of June 1, 2013.
Progress Energy said the RFP is to be issued, in accordance with Florida Public Service Commission rules, on its Internet site, www.progress-energy.com/PEF2013RFP.
A bidders meeting is planned June 19 in Tampa, Fla. Following screenings and evaluations, a short list of proposals is to be announced by Oct. 13. Progress Energy Florida, a subsidiary of Progress Energy, expects to name finalists by Nov. 12 and winners by Dec. 12.
