Georgia renews call to refurbish waterways of 1,250-MW Enguri, 245-Vardnili cascade

Georgia project operator Engurhesi Ltd. seeks bids for civil works construction to refurbish waterways and to construct a new discharge channel for the 1,250-MW Enguri hydroelectric project and the 245-MW Vardnili hydropower cascade on Georgia’s Enguri River. Bids are due March 28.

Engurhesi issued a similar solicitation in early 2013. It awarded a contract in 2012 to JV GeoEngineering/Hydrosphere of Georgia for topographic and bathymetric studies of waterways for the Vardnili cascade.

Engurhesi has been pursuing rehabilitation of Enguri and the Vardnili cascade — 125-MW Vardnili 1 and Vardnili 2, 3, and 4 of 40 MW each — for several years with funding from international lenders. The projects were built in the 1970s as part of the same scheme. Three of the Vardnili plants were destroyed during civil war leaving the water channel without maintenance for 15 years.

The project operator now seeks bids for rehabilitation of existing waterways, including spillway and tailrace channels, and construction of a new reinforced concrete discharge channel from a low-level outlet.
