Ghana seeks crane, penstock rehab for 1,062-MW Akosombo

Ghana’s Volta River Authority (VRA) seeks bids for rehabilitation work on cranes and penstocks of the 1,062-MW Akosombo hydroelectric project on the Volta River. Bids are due September 4, 2009.

Ghana received a credit from the World Bank’s International Development Association for the West Africa Power Pool Program (WAPP). In addition to funding the hydro project rehabilitation, VRA is allotting money for transmission facilities of the WAPP Coastal Transmission Backbone Project. (HydroWorld 11/4/08)

VRA seeks bids for rehabilitation of cranes and rust treatment of cranes and penstocks. Work includes an inspection and condition survey as well as design, manufacture, supply, rehabilitation, testing, and commissioning of cranes and penstocks at Akosombo.

Earlier this year, VRA awarded a 1.9 million euro (US$2.5 million) contract to Association of Royal Haskoning of the Netherlands and Norplan AS of Norway to carry out emergency preparedness planning for Akosombo and 160-MW Kpong hydroelectric project on the Volta. (HydroWorld 4/24/09)

The current solicitation includes rehabilitation of six penstocks, an 85-ton intake gantry crane, a 450-ton powerhouse crane, spillway mobile hoists, and supply of a 50-ton mobile crane. The work is to be completed in 15 months.

Bid documents in English may be obtained from the address below by written application and a fee of US$150, plus another US$100 for courier delivery, by cash or certified check to the Volta River Authority. A pre-bid meeting and site visit is scheduled July 29.

Substations sought for WAPP Coastal Transmission Backbone

Volta River Authority also seeks bids by September 4 for expansion of the 330-kilovolt Volta substation at Tema, for the termination of the Volta Mome Hagou transmission line, and the 161-kV Asiekpe substation, for the installation of multi-phase shifting transformers to regulate power flow on the existing 161-kV Akosombo-Lome lines.

Bid documents in English may be obtained from the address below by written application and a fee of US$200, plus another US$100 for courier delivery, by direct deposit to the account of the Volta River Authority. A pre-bid meeting and site visit is scheduled July 28.
