Sustainable Energy for All has released its Global Tracking Framework 2017 report, which says hydropower is an important contributor to the global renewable energy mix.
This third edition of the report provides an overview of long-term trends since 1990 and focuses on progress achieved from 2012 to 2014. This report was prepared by the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development/The World Bank.
“This year’s Global Tracking Framework (GTF) is an urgent call for leaders to take greater, more focused action to deliver sustainable energy for all,” says Rachel Kyte, chief executive officer for Sustainable Energy for All and Special Representative to the UN Secretary-General. “We have just 13 years to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. To meet the Sustainable Development Goal for energy (SDG 7), Sustainable Energy for All and our partners are working to advance progress on three 2030 objectives: ensure universal access to modern energy services; double the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix; and double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency.”
Global electrification reached 85.3% in 2014, which is a modest improvement since 2012 but a slowdown from preceding years. The share of renewable energy in global total final energy consumption was 18.3% in 2014, compared with 17.9% in 2012. The report says, “Progress is nowhere near fast enough to double its share to 36% in 2010-30 as envisaged by the SEforALL objective.”
Regarding hydro, the report says, “The largest absolute increase in modern renewable energy sources came from hydropower.”

- In Latin America and Caribbean, the share of modern renewable energy has long been high at 24%, reflecting early use of abundant biomass and hydropower resources
- Off-grid renewable capacity in Africa reached 717 MW in 2015, with small hydropower accounting for 67 MW
- Brazil and Canada’s leadership is built on hydropower generation
- Spain has a diversified renewable energy portfolio, with sizable contributions of hydropower, wind and several solar and biomass technologies
- China led by far in terms of advancing global renewable energy consumption, driven by hydropower, solar and wind generation
- The United States experienced a decrease in hydropower generation during the tracking period
- In 2015, the number of renewable energy industry jobs increase to more than 8 million, with an additional 1.3 million estimated to be directly employed in large hydropower
