Hydro plant modification bidding extended for U.S. Battle Creek habitat

The Bureau of Reclamation has extended the deadline for bidding to perform powerhouse bypass work at the 37.9-MW Battle Creek hydroelectric project to implement one of United States’ largest cold water anadromous fish restoration efforts. Bids now are due April 30.

Bids previously were due April 20. (HydroWorld 4/14/10) The Battle Creek Salmon and Steelhead Restoration project includes removal or retrofitting of dams in Pacific Gas & Electric Co.’s Battle Creek project in California. (HydroWorld 1/27/09) The Interior Department received $26 million in stimulus money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 for the project. (HydroWorld 4/15/09)

PG&E will continue to operate the project’s five hydropower plants. However, less water will pass through three plants, 7-MW South, 8-MW Inskip, and 13-MW Coleman. Generation at 9-MW Volta and 900-kW Volta 2 will be unaffected.

The Bureau of Reclamation seeks construction of a direct connection from the Inskip powerhouse tailrace to the Coleman Canal including 700 feet of 84-inch-diameter buried concrete pressure pipe, cast-in-place concrete intake connectors, and a blocking panel and slide gate at the powerhouse outlet. Work also involves an Inskip powerhouse penstock bypass to Coleman canal that includes 3,700 feet of 66-inch-diameter buried concrete pressure pipe; 300 feet of 72-inch-diameter buried concrete pressure pipe; a cast-in-place concrete intake and three reinforced concrete energy dissipaters; a 700-foot cast-in-place concrete chute; relocation of an existing fish hatchery water supply line; and related site work, diversion works, metalwork, and mechanical and electrical equipment.

The work is expected to cost between $5 million and $10 million.
