Hydro-Quebec planning hydroelectric projects

Hydro-Quebec is seeking to invest $23 billion in new hydroelectric projects and in expanding its existing fleet between 2009-2013, according to the utility’s strategic plan.

The utility is expected to generate close to 37 TWh of surplus electricity during that same time period.

While net exports of electricity are expected to grow from eight per cent of volume in 2008 to 12 per cent in 2013, these exports are expected to earn less revenue for the state utility.

Among Hydro-Quebec’s recent moves toward expansion is an agreement to purchase New Brunswick Power assets in a (US$4.45 billion) deal. (HydroWorld 10/29/09)
