Hydro station being added to Angola’s Ganjelas Dam

An Angola official says the long-awaited completion of Angola’s Ganjelas Dam is being delayed another four months for the addition of a hydroelectric plant to the irrigation project.

The state-owned Angola Press Agency quoted Huila Province Agriculture and Rural Development Director Lutero Campos saying Ganjelas (also spelled Gandjelas or Ngandjelas) would be completed in May on the Nene River, 45 kilometers south of Lubango.

Campos said the project was to be complete in January, but was delayed for technical reasons, including installation of a hydro station, as well as pumping stations on two irrigation channels. He did not disclose the capacity of the hydro plant.

China’s Sinohydro Corp. has been completing construction of the dam and irrigation project, which was begun in 1964 but halted since 1975.
