IBWC awards contract for penstock repairs at 132-MW Amistad hydroelectric plant

The U.S. Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission has awarded a US$101,250 contract to Mike Larsen Co. to repair a penstock bulkgate at the 132-MW Amistad Dam.

The commission, which owns and operates hydroelectric projects along the U.S./Mexico border, last solicited bids for the work in September.

The work includes the repair of Amistad’s Penstock No. 4, which is allowing an uncontrollable flow of about 60 cms after being damaged and jammed. IBWC inspectors questioned the safety of the dam in 2007 after analysis indicated sinkholes could affect the structure’s stability.

The Amistad hydropower project is located in Del Rio, Texas.
