Impact study sought of Tanzania energy work including 8-MW Malagarasi

The government of Tanzania seeks consultants to assess the impact of a proposed energy sector project that includes development of the 8-MW Malagarasi hydroelectric project on the Malagarasi River. Proposals are due April 12.

The U.S. government’s Millennium Challenge Corp. awarded a US$698 million grant to Tanzania to fund improvements to transport, energy, and water supply, including the Malagarasi project. (HydroWorld 10/19/09) Tanzania Electric Supply Co. signed a five-year agreement in 2008 worth US$206.5 million for development of the hydro plant and improvement of electricity transmission and distribution. Millennium Challenge Account-Tanzania, a special entity overseeing the work, awarded a contract in 2009 to Jose Cabral of Venezuela to oversee environmental mitigation of Malagarasi and a contract to Pravash Mishra of India to support resettlement activity. In the current solicitation, MCA-Tanzania seeks proposals from consultants for data collection to assess the impact of the proposed activities within the energy sector project. The energy sector project includes developing Malagarasi, as well as Zanzibar Interconnector Activity, Kigoma Distribution Activity, and Distribution Systems Rehabilitation and Extension Activity.
