Italy utility awards US$81.26 million rehab for three small hydros

Utility Endesa Italia has awarded rehabilitation contracts totaling 60 million euros (US$81.26 million) for three small hydroelectric projects north of Rome.

Andritz VA Tech Hydro reported a consortium led by its VA Tech Escher Wyss S.r.l. unit won the contract to rehabilitate hydro plants in Galleto, Baschi, and Alviano totaling 53.2 MW. VA Tech receives about two-thirds of the contract amount.

VA Tech Escher Wyss is responsible for design engineering, manufacture, installation, and commissioning of turbine units. Other equipment being supplied includes digital governors, power station controls, and auxiliary electrical equipment based on VA Tech’s proprietary NEPTUN concept.

The contract calls for four vertical Francis turbines for Galleto and two for Baschi totaling 40 MW. Alviano is to receive two 6.6-MW Francis turbines totaling 13.2 MW.
