Kawasaki tidal power unit certified by renewables group

HAMBURG 4/30/12 (PennWell) — GL Renewables Certification will certify a Kawasaki Heavy Industries tidal energy converter prototype, the consulting group announces.

The certification will be carried out according to GL Renewables Certification’s (GL RC) “Guideline for the Certification of Ocean Energy Converters” and comes shortly before KHI will install a 1-MW unit at the European Marine Energy Test Centre near Orkney, Scotland.

KHI is currently developing the tidal power unit at its Akashi facility off the coast of Okinawa.

GL RC says its certification is an “important prerequisite for safe, reliable and highly productive facilities.” The company has offices in the United States, Canada, India and China.
