Kenya seeks bids for feasibility study of Karura hydro

Kenya Electricity Generating Co. Ltd. (KenGen) seeks bids for a feasibility study of the Karura hydroelectric project on Kenya’s Tana River. Bids are due July 20, 2009.

The Karura project is proposed 15 kilometers downstream of the 44-MW Kindaruma hydro project. It is to utilize residual head between Kindaruma and the 144-MW Kiambere project. (HydroWorld 5/1/09) The run-of-river project is expected to have a head of 40 meters and flows of 190 cubic meters per second discharged from Kindaruma.

KenGen seeks a consultant to establish technical, economic, environmental, and social feasibility of the project and prepare a feasibility study report. It also is to estimate the cost of implementing the project, prepare preliminary design, and draft an implementation schedule.

Tender documents may be obtained from the Supply Chain Manager address below for 3,000 shillings (US$39) in cash or bankers check to Kenya Electricity Generating Co. Ltd. The document also may be obtained from the KenGen Internet site, www.kengen.co.ke, for a reduced fee of 2,000 shillings (US$26).
