LIHI certifies two small hydro power plants

PORTLAND, Maine 5/23/12 (PennWell) — The Low Impact Hydropower Institute’s governing board announced that the 520-kW Open Square and 250-kW Martinsville hydroelectric projects have met LIHI certification criteria.

The Open Square hydropower plant is located in Holyoke, Mass., and is owned and operated by Holyoke Gas & Electric. Its certification will expire Dec. 5, 2016.

Meanwhile, the Martinsville hydro plant is located in Hartland, Vt., and is operated by the Martinsville Hydro Corporation. Its certification expires April 30, 2016.

LIHI is a non-profit organization that uses its voluntary certification program to reduce the impacts of hydropower dams through market incentives. Candidates are evaluated in criteria including their ecological, economic and social impact.

In addition, reported earlier this year that the 500-kW Cresticon Hydroelectric Project and four projects owned by Central Vermont Public Service has been submitted to LIHI for certification.
