Madeira extends bidding for dam to expand Calheta hydro system

The electric utility of the Portuguese island of Madeira has extended the deadline for bids to build a dam and expand irrigation canals to expand the Calheta hydroelectric system on the island. Bids now are due December 21.

Empresa de Electricidade da Madeira SA (EEM) previously called for bids by November 15 to build a 31-meter-tall embankment dam to store 1 million cubic meters of water and to expand the Paul and Paul 2 irrigation canals. The work is part of the planned expansion of EEM’s Calheta hydroelectric system, which includes the 4.57-MW Calheta hydro plant and the 7.3-MW Calheta de Inverno plant.
