Metals firm to develop 23-MW Nova Brito in Brazil

U.S.-based metals producer Novelis Inc. announced it is expanding its hydropower generating capacity in Brazil to keep pace with its plans to expand production facilities.

Novelis said public hearings are under way on its proposed 23-MW Nova Brito hydroelectric project in Minas Gerais State.

The company operates nine hydropower plants in Minas Gerais totaling 117 MW. It produces 60 percent of the energy it uses, investing about 500 million reais (US$300 million) in recent years on the construction of new power plants.

Novelis plans to invest more than US$30 million in its Brazil operations in the next 18 months.
