Mozambique seeks Limpopo Basin water project, study of Mapai Dam

Mozambique seeks firms for design and development of a large-scale water infrastructure project in the Limpopo River Basin as well as a feasibility study of a multi-purpose dam at Mapai in that basin. Responses to two solicitations are due December 19 and 22.

Mozambique’s national water directorate, Direccao Nacional de Aguas (DNA), recruited consultants in January to perform a hydraulic and flood study of the Limpopo River Basin and in 2013 to plan dam design and construction for multiple uses, possibly including power generation. It also recruited consultants in 2013 to help monitor international river control agreements and to serve as hydro-mechanical specialist on a water resources development expert panel.

Climate resilience study sought for Limpopo Basin water project

In the first of two solicitations aimed at building climate resilience in the Limpopo Basin, the Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) seeks bids by December 19 from suppliers to support Mozambique’s southern waters regional administration, Administracao Regional de Aguas do Sul (ARA-Sul), in design and development of a large-scale water infrastructure project in the Limpopo Basin that would provide a significant long-term response to challenges of climate change and hydrological variability.

CDKN said planning, financing and construction of large-scale water infrastructure requires addressing several social, environmental, technical, economic and climate change challenges through a comprehensive set of pre-feasibility and feasibility studies and assessments. It said the selected supplier would provide, in particular, technical assistance to ensure that climate resilience is integrated across all stages of project development. It said the analysis would help ARA-Sul leverage investment for construction and implementation of the project, including access to climate finance.

Tender documents may be obtained by e-mail request to mark.h.gaston@uk.pwc.com with a copy to cdknetwork.procurement@uk.pwc.com. Responses are due by noon, United Kingdom time, December 19. For information, see Internet: http://cdkn.org.

Feasibility study sought for Mapai Dam

ARA-Sul also invites expressions of interest by December 22 from consultants to perform a feasibility study of a large multi-purpose dam at Mapai. That project also is being promoted under the program to build climate resilience in the Limpopo Basin.

Work would include a pre-feasibility assessment and strategic decision making including a climate change strategic framework and feasibility studies of the proposed dam and other multi-purpose development options. The work is expected to require 22 months.

Expressions of interest are due by 3 p.m. December 22 to the address below, labeled “Pre-feasibility Study for the Mapai Dam.” For information, contact Director General, Administracao Regional de Aguas do Sul, Avenida Samora Machel, No. 30, 6 Andar, CP 4033, Maputo, Mozambique; (258) 213-06729; Fax: (258) 213-06756.
