Namibia seeks civil works to add unit to 249-MW Ruacana

Namibia Power Corp. (NamPower) seeks bids for civil works to add a fourth 80-MW generating unit at the 249-MW Ruacana hydroelectric project on the Cunene River in Namibia. Bids are due February 20, 2009.

A year ago, NamPower approved spending N$350 million (US$51.4 million) to add the unit to the three-unit Ruacana, whose original design allowed for installation of four units. (HNN 12/18/07) NamPower Managing Director Paulinus Shilamba previously said the plant already includes a pressure tunnel, surge head bay, penstock, draft tube, and tailrace channel for the fourth unit.

NamPower seeks bids to supply additional civil works in the powerhouse and the penstock, plus a new warehouse, eight-unit employee housing, and services for the turbine-generator contractor during installation. Work is expected to require 30 months.

Bid documents may be obtained for N$200 (US$20) from the address below (Telephone (264) 61-2052396). They may be obtained free of charge from the NamPower Internet site at

A bidders meeting and site visit are scheduled at the project at 10 a.m. January 15, 2009. Bids are due by noon February 20, 2009.
