Nicaragua seeks rehab equipment, civil work at two 50-MW projects

Nicaragua utility Empresa Nicaraguense de Electricidad (Enel) invites expressions of interest to provide equipment and civil work for the rehabilitation of the 50-MW Centroamerica and 50-MW Santa Barbara hydroelectric projects on Nicaragua’s Viejo River. Bids in two solicitations are due December 2, 2009.

The European Investment Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) are cooperating to provide Nicaragua a financial package for the rehab work. (HydroWorld 4/2/09)

An Enel subsidiary, Generadora Hidroelectrica S.A. (Hidrogesa), operates the plants, which began operation in 1965 and 1971. The plants operate in a cascade, with Centroamerica using water from Apanas Dam that then is discharged to Virgen Dam where Santa Barbara reuses the water before it is released to the Viejo River.

CABEI awarded a contract to the Applus-Norcontrol-Nipsa consortium in 2007 to perform a feasibility study of rehabilitating the projects.

In the first of two solicitations, Enel invites expressions of interest in the design, supply, assembly, start-up, and testing of equipment for both hydro projects. In the second solicitation, Enel seeks expressions of interest in the supervision of construction of a bypass system for Centroamerica.

Expressions of interest and qualifications are due to the address below by December 2.
