Nigeria, China sign Kainji hydro plant modernization contract

The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) has signed a contract with Hydrochina Huadong Engineering Corp. and Harbin Electricity Corp. of China for rehabilitation of the Kainji hydro station in Nigeria.

The contract, which covers rehabilitation of three units, is valued at $82 million. Work on the first unit (120 MW) is scheduled to be completed in about 37 months, with the remaining two units (one 120 MW and one 100 MW) operational within 42 months.

Alhaji Afolabi Ganiyu, general manager of the World Bank Projects Management Unit of PHCN, said that the project was being sponsored with a 30-year World Bank loan at 2.5 percent interest.

He said that the modernization project will be supervised by Coyne et Bellier.
