Nigeria pre-qualifies firms to refurbish 760-MW Kainji

Power Holding Co. of Nigeria (PHCN) invites applications for pre-qualification to rehabilitate the 760-MW Kainji hydroelectric project on the Niger River. Responses are due December 4.

The World Bank approved a US$500 million credit in July to develop Niger Basin water resources, including aid to rehabilitate Kainji and the 540-MW Jebba hydroelectric project. Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council last week approved the allocation of its share of the credit to rehabilitate Kainji and Jebba. (HNN 10/2/07)

In the current solicitation, PHCN seeks to pre-qualify firms for rehabilitation of Kainji. Work is to include:
o The powerhouse;
o Three generating units, 120-MW 1G5, 120-MW 1G6, and 100-MW 1G12, and possibly two more, 80-MW 1G9 and 80-MW 1G10; and
o Common services.

Pre-qualification documents in English may be obtained from the second address below upon payment of 14,000 naira or US$100 by certified bank check to PHCN-PMU at Abuja. Courier delivery costs an additional 14,000 naira or US$100 for Europe and West Africa, or 28,000 naira or US$200 for all other countries, payable no later than October 30 by demand draft to Manager, PHCH-PMU at Abuja.
