Nigeria seeks inventory of hydropower sites in Niger, Benue basins

Power Holding Co. of Nigeria (PHCN) invites expressions of interest from consulting firms to develop an inventory of potential hydropower project sites in the catchment areas of the Niger and Benue rivers in Nigeria. Responses are due September 21.

The World Bank’s International Development Association approved a loan to the Niger Basin Authority, Autorite du Bassin du Niger, including Benin, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria, for a program of water resources development and sustainable management of ecosystems in the Niger Basin.

Under the same program, PHCN recruited consultants in June to establish a dam safety system and to perform a study of waterborne diseases for the 760-MW Kainji and 540-MW Jebba hydroelectric projects on the Niger in Nigeria.

PHCN now seeks consultants to review hydropower sites in the two basins to provide an inventory and prioritization of potential projects for development. The work is expected to require 12 months.

Expressions of interest are due by mail or in person to the first address below by September 21.
