Oregon dam to receive new hydro facility

FERC has issued a license to Symbiotics, LLC, to attach a 10-MW generating facility to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dam on the Applegate River in Oregon.

Symbiotics builds new hydro projects and retrofits existing dams that do not have hydroelectric facilities.

Construction is expected to begin in 2011 on the estimated US$19 million project, which was certified by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission as low impact.

Applegate Dam, located near the city of Medford in southern Oregon, could begin generating electricity within four years.

The Applegate Dam project includes plans to reintroduce winter steelhead fish upstream of Applegate Lake.
