OWA releases small hydropower development guide

The Ontario Waterpower Association has released a new document designed to help municipalities, public sector entities, private land owners and cooperatives to participate and partner in hydroelectric projects.

The guide — titled, Community Guide to Small Waterpower Development — includes an overview of hydrology, hydropower technologies, resources access and site viability, environmental considerations, financial modeling and business development, OWA said, with information prepared with support from the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) Education and Capacity Building (ECB) program.

“Ontario has more than a century of history in community waterpower development and ownership,” OWA President Paul Norris said. “There is significant interest in retrofitting existing infrastructure, and this guide will help communities understand how to consider local opportunities in small hydro.”

The guide is available by contacting OWA via email, or by calling Stephanie Landers, OWA Communications and Public Outreach Coordinator, at 866-743-1500, ext. 25.
