OWET annual conference provides forum for ocean energy discussion

The Oregon Wave Energy Trust (OWET) will hold its eighth annual ocean energy conference later this month in Astoria, Ore., with the goal of cultivating innovation and opportunity in the marine and hydrokinetic sector.

America’s Pacific Northwest is particularly conducive to domestic wave energy development with a combination of high-energy waves, a strong demand for renewable energy, capable seaports, an established marine and fabrication industry base, and available power grid connections near the coast, OWET said.

The region is already home to the Oregon Territorial Sea Plan (TSP), while Newport, Ore., has been selected by the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center (NNMREC) as home of the new Pacific Marine Energy Center.

The annual conference includes a number of sessions and networking opportunities, as well as a keynote address featuring Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore., who has worked to encourage responsible development of ocean and other forms renewable energy throughout her career.

Ocean Renewable Energy Conference VIII takes place September 25-26 at Astoria’s Liberty Theater.
