Pakistan extends civil work deadline for 1,410-MW Tarbela 4th Extension

Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has extended the deadline of applications for pre-qualification for civil works of the 1,410-MW Tarbela 4th Extension hydropower project. Responses now are due August 27.

WAPDA previously invited pre-qualification by July 27 for civil works and by August 22 for electro-mechanical equipment for Tarbela 4th Extension.

The extension project would add another powerhouse to the 3,478-MW Tarbela hydroelectric project on the Indus River. The new powerhouse would contain three 470-MW turbine-generators utilizing discharge from the existing irrigation Tunnel 4 of Tarbela Dam.

The World Bank said in March it approved a US$400 million loan for construction of Tarbela 4th Extension. In 2010, WAPDA named a joint venture of Mott MacDonald and Coyne et Bellier to be design engineer of the project.

WAPDA now invites applications for pre-qualification by August 27 for civil works including modification of intakes of Tunnels 3 and 4; design, supply, installation, and testing of a penstock; and construction of the powerhouse. WAPDA expects to invite bids from pre-qualified firms in October or November.

In a separate solicitation, WAPDA previously invited applications for pre-qualification by August 22 for design, supply, installation, commissioning, and testing of electro-mechanical equipment. Equipment includes three vertical-shaft Francis turbines and 470 MW generators, main inlet and relief valves, generator transformers, 500-kilovolt SF6 circuit breakers, switchgear, control instrumentation, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and other associated powerhouse equipment. WAPDA expects to invite bids from pre-qualified firms in December.

Complete sets of pre-qualification documents for both solicitations, in English, may be obtained from WAPDA’s Internet site at www.wapda.gov.pk or from the address below.
